Plantar Fasciopathy - A Guide to Heel Pain
The most common cause of foot pain
Are you experiencing persistent heel pain, especially with those first few steps in the morning? You might be dealing with plantar fasciopathy, a common foot condition that affects millions of people worldwide. At our Podiatry Clinic, we understand the impact this condition can have on your daily life, and we're here to help you navigate through it.
What is Plantar Fasciopathy?
Plantar fasciopathy, often referred to as plantar fasciitis, is a condition characterized by inflammation and irritation of the plantar fascia – a thick band of tissue that runs along the bottom of your foot, connecting the heel bone to the toes. This condition is a leading cause of heel pain, affecting individuals of all ages and activity levels.
Causes:
Several factors contribute to the development of plantar fasciopathy, including:
Overuse or High-Impact Activities: Excessive running, walking, or standing on hard surfaces can strain the plantar fascia, leading to inflammation. This can also be caused by sudden weight gain and is commonly seen in pregnant women where the additional weight gained through pregnancy outpaces the tissues ability to adapt.
Improper Footwear: Wearing shoes with inadequate support or poor arch support can contribute to the development of plantar fasciopathy. The price of a shoe does not indicate it’s mechanical suitability, so the expensive designer pumps may have to take a trip to the charity shop!
Age and Foot Mechanics: As we age, the plantar fascia may lose elasticity, making it more susceptible to injury. Additionally, abnormal foot mechanics, such as flat feet or high arches, can increase the risk of overloading.
Symptoms:
The hallmark symptom of plantar fasciopathy is heel pain, particularly near the bottom of the heel or in the arch of the foot. The pain is often most intense during the first steps after waking up in the morning or after prolonged periods of rest.
Treatment Options:
Rest and Ice: Giving your feet a break and applying ice to the affected area can help reduce inflammation and alleviate pain, particularly when it is very acute. This isn’t a route to “curing” the condition but can reduce symptomatic pain for a short period of time.
Stretching Exercises: Performing specific exercises to stretch the Achilles tendon and the plantar fascia can improve flexibility and ease discomfort. The reason for this is that the Achilles Tendon & Plantar Fascia share a common insertion and from an anatomical standpoint are almost indistinguishable from each other at their origin. For this reason stretching of both structures ensures the adequate amount of “give” within the tissue, therefore preventing regular recurrence of overuse or injury from overexertion. Most contemporary research demonstrates this to be the most effective route to resolving persistent Plantar Fasciopathy
Footwear Modifications: Wearing supportive shoes with proper arch support can provide relief and prevent further strain on the plantar fascia. This is particularly important first thing in the morning or when getting up during the night. Having a set of well structured sliders or Croc’s like shoes can help to prevent the fascia and Achilles tendon from being suddenly stretched after several hours of complete relaxation and no loading. This often overlooked simple step can often make a significant difference to overall pain levels and pays dividends over time!
Orthotic Devices: Custom or over-the-counter orthotic inserts can provide additional support and help distribute pressure evenly across the foot by assisting with proper mechanics during gait.
